Cabaret Paradis LatinAlready been to the Moulin Rouge and the Lido, we decided to try the Paradis Latin cabaret in the Latin quarter. We were very satisfied. Artists and Dancers of high level, show of great quality, good dinner. I would recommend.

Note from Thierry :
Dear Roger, thanks for your advice. I have added the lovely logo of the Paradis Latin to your post. To know more about it, access The Paradis Latin home page in English.

Café de la Tourelle

Cafe de la TourelleOn the advice of the hotel receptionist, we had lunch at the Café de La Tourelle which is located on rue Hautefeuille in the Latin Quarter, a stone’s throw away from the Saint Michel square.

We were looking for a small, typically Parisian restaurant, not too expensive and we found exactly that. This restaurant has all the features of an old Parisian bistrot. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s possible to have a drink here outside of mealtimes.

It more than likely owes its name to the turret (tourelle) overhead on the facade of the building. Its small red shopfront with lattice windows makes it very discreet.

A man, who appeared to be the owner, brought us the menu as soon as we had been seated. It was in French only and not much bigger than my hand but there was enough choice there for us to find our heart’s desire among the typically French dishes. Quantities are generous. We didn’t take a starter.  A glass of wine each to accompany our meal and then on to dessert. Personally, I can the crème brulée with chestnut honey. It was delicious. With coffee afterwards, our total bill came to under 40 euros for two. Very reasonable for Paris given what we had eaten.

We will keep the Café de la Tourelle as one of our favourite addresses.  My husband speaks French so I can’t say if they speak English but it seems that the restaurant caters to more locals than tourists. It’s a good sign.

Shakespeare and Company

Paris is full of strange, wonderful places to discover. Only this week, I found another one of them. I had heard about Shakespeare and Company, a totally English language bookstore, but I had never visited it before. It is located on the Left Bank, across from Notre Dame in a backstreet.

Inside, the original flooring, surely as old as the building itself, has been preserved. The walls too probably but it’s more difficult to judge because of the shelves of books that reach the ceiling. And when there’s no more room there, they are piled on the floor or along the old wooden staircase. It’s a good place to be, surrounded by novels, anthologies, comic books, biographies, and lots of other kinds of books. On the first floor, the same atmosphere exists with books piled up everywhere. Nooks for reading have been created and in one corner, there’s an old upright piano available for whoever might feel the urge to play it. This is where I met David from Manchester who plays the piano perfectly even though he says he can’t read a note of music. He too is discovering Shakespeare and Company for the first time. Like me, he is enchanted by the place.

Deliberately, I am not posting any photo of the inside. Instead, I recommend you to go there and discover it for yourself. Let me know what you think! It reminds me of that old bookshop from the film Notting Hill. I’m looking forward to going back…

It’s confirmed. Winter is here and is cold. This frozen fountain stands place Edmond Rostand facing the Luxembong Garden at the crossroads of Boulevard Saint Michel and Rue Soufflot.
